Our TeamHOMErgent is led by a team of seasoned professionals with an extensive range of skills. Combining many decades of relevant experience, our senior executives have built a number of companies and possess the expertise to rapidly grow HOMErgent. We’ve created breakthrough system solutions for government markets, successful enterprise software products, investment funds, new composite material factories, and international businesses. We’re building a for-profit enterprise because scaling a breakthrough product fast requires creative capitalism at its best – yet our underlying motivations are about sustainable human development in its deepest sense. Joining our team to help us succeed in our mission will enable those who participate to “do well by doing good”. And our vision of what an instant “home” should be looks very, very good. Our MarketsThe Flexayurt’s unique combination of portability, resource efficiency, self-sufficiency, and comfort can yield rapid economic payback by immediately replacing tents and trailers in several billion-dollar sheltering markets. Longer-term, our products can evolve these markets from reliance on endless logistics dependence and complexity to a “one delivery and you’re self-sufficient” philosophy, providing order of magnitude efficiency improvements in multiple value chains spanning sheltering and utility provisioning. Our key market opportunities include:
Our immediate markets are upwards of $20B annually with no better products than tents or trailers that are unsustainable financially, functionally, and environmentally. All of our markets are destined to grow as a result of increasing natural disaster rates, increasing natural resource scarcity, and increasing dispersion of military endeavors. These same factors will increase the relative value of our solutions versus bulkier alternatives that require longer deployment times and extended supply chains. Our GenesisFlexayurts are an advanced commercialization of the public domain Hexayurt design, invented in 2002 by Vinay Gupta and pioneered by the US National Defense University’s STAR-TIDES project. The STAR-TIDES project promotes sustainable, affordable support to stressed populations—post-disaster, impoverished, or post-war in a domestic or foreign context for short- or long-term operations, with or without military involvement. HOMErgent's products extend years of STAR-TIDES work in exploring distributed infrastructure, using its widely acclaimed hexagonal yurt structure as an organizing approach for family-scale infrastructure integration. HOMErgent was formed in late 2007 upon recognizing the broad range of major economic, social, and environmental problems that could be alleviated by scaling a company to commercialize the STAR-TIDES approach of self-sufficient distributed infrastructure. Since that time, we have focused on developing a technology base, product design, and business model to succeed in doing that. Our BuzzOur goal of resource self-sufficiency for preventing strife and responding to US disasters earned us “Best Security Idea of 2008” in the Global Security Challenge. In 2009 HOMErgent was a semi-finalist in the Cleantech Open and a presenter at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Industry Growth Forum. HOMErgent was highlighted in November 2009 on Fast Company.com. Our pre-production prototype was displayed publicly for the first time in February 2010 at a major military trade event and was not only featured on local television, but also spotlighted during the conference keynote address. Our FutureOur technology platform is modular, adaptable, and expandable, to provide enormous application flexibility, easy field upgrades, and continuous evolution as component and subsystem technologies advance. We’re currently testing building panels made from 80% post-consumer waste and furniture materials made from 90% waste, both at lower cost than virgin materials. And we are pursuing a powerful technology roadmap for further utility infrastructure integration, efficiency, and self-sufficiency. We have five patents pending, and a clear path to enabling low-cost net-zero lives. Our OpportunityWe’re looking to grow by attracting key stakeholders – people, partners, customers, and investors. We want to work with outstanding minds as excited about this opportunity as we are - and who are as deeply concerned about advancing sustainable alternatives to resource-intensive off-grid housing.
